Sattal of Seven Lakes located close to each other is at a distance of 20 KM from Nainital and it will take one hour via Bowali. On the main road connecting Haldwani to Almora at MehrGaon you have to take a right turn and Sattal is 7 KM from here.

There is a view point before descending to Sat Tal Lakes in Uttarakhand and from here you can see two lakes side by side Hanuman-tal and Bharat-tal . These two lakes receive less water and almost remain dry like in summer months. The main Lake consist of three lakes Ram-tal, Lakshman-tal and Sita-tal joined together by narrow passages clearly visible in dry seasons when less water is available. These lakes are heaven for migratory birds. All the busy market and tourist activites of Sattal is located around these three lakes only. Here is the list of seven lakes known as Sattal

Sattal – Cluster of Seven Lakes
Sattal is a cluster of mysteriously inter-connected seven freshwater lakes located in the Nainital
district of Kumaon region. Sat Tal is perched at an altitude of 1370 mts above sea level offering
splendors of nature. The group of lakes is set amidst dense forests of oak and pine trees.
Sattal that literally suggests the ‘Seven Lakes’ is a scenic place which exhibits idyllic surroundings
accentuated by the delightful atmosphere that could even tempt the lousy ones to have a rendezvous.

Bird Watching in Sattal
The freshwater lake of Sattal is a home to the natural ora-fauna. These seven lakes are a home to
the migratory birds that ock here in winters. More than 500 migratory bird species have been
recorded in this area. One can easily spot birds like the red-billed blue magpie, kingshers, bluethroated and brown-headed barbets in Sattal. Besides birds, the town is also home to 525 species of
butteries, more than 11,000 species of moths, beetles and about 20 species of mammals.

lovers to have a look at some of the vibrant species of butteries.

As is evident from the names of these lakes, it is believed that Ram, Lakshman & Sita came here during their exile and lived close to these lakes.

What is interesting about these 7 lakes called Sattal is that they are all freshwater lakes and they are all interconnected to each other. No wonder, their name is always taken together as if they are seven bowls fed by the same source. Surrounded by tall trees like those of Oak and Pine, these lakes present the pristine nature.

At a distance of about 23 Kms. from Nainital at an altitude of 1370 mts. Sattal is a unique, unforgettable spot having cluster of lakes placed amidst the oak forest. It is comparable with Westmoreland of England. As one approach toward Sattal first lake is old Nal Damyanti Lake. On moving ahead there is the ashram of Stanley Johns an American Missionary. Next lake is Panna or Garude lake.As we move down there is a cluster of three lakes , these lakes are Ram,Laxman and Sita lake.
